My philosophy on Pilates is simple. First and foremost Pilates IS exercise!

Joseph Pilates' Method of Body Conditioning, or Contrology, commonly known today as Pilates, trains the mind and the body to work together. Pilates is a comprehensive system of over 500 different exercises performed on a number of pieces of equipment that Joseph Pilates developed and patented himself.  Each exercise is performed in a particular order, with a minimum number of repetitions and a high degree of precision and mental focus. The movements are continuous, using minimal motion to transition between exercises, and as the client's ability progresses, the workout becomes increasingly more challenging and aerobic.

Pilates is innately more effective than conventional workout regimes because each exercise works several muscle groups simultaneously. A single movement will stretch one muscle group while strengthening another, all while requiring a great deal of abdominal, or core, control. The result is a lengthened, strong, toned body without the bulk that develops with other exercise methods.

The core, or in Pilates terminology, the powerhouse, is comprised of the abdominal, lower back, and the buttocks muscles. All Pilates movements are initiated from the powerhouse . This strengthens the support muscles deep within the body which are typically overlooked in conventional exercises. Activating the powerhouse provides a stable spine that allows uninhibited movement of the arms and legs, increasing flexibility, strength and agility all at the same time.  Various other forms of exercise and athletic activities develop strength in the arms and legs, but largely ignore the powerhouse because these muscles are difficult to effectively isolate and strengthen.
